Unique Creative Exhibition
Local creative artists are offering an opportunity to see their inspirational work at a forthcoming exhibition, as well as experience demonstrations of their creative skills.
Joelle Harris and Pauline Fitzpatrick have united to create a textile exhibition, taking place at Cromford Mill between Saturday 12th and Thursday 17th June 2010. The exhibition will explore colour and textiles, many of which have been inspired by the beautiful Derbyshire landscape and will offer something for everyone.
Joelle, of Branston, often wanders the beautiful Derbyshire countryside looking for inspiration,
taking photographs of the flora and fauna, returning to her studio with ideas and creating unique
embroidery, bags and jewellery; a range that is inspired by the seasons.
“My mum was always sewing and I had my first sewing machine at the age of seven. As a
teenager, I created clothes for myself and was always keen to experiment with textile crafts. I
then went on to study O level Embroidery and A level Dressmaking”, explained Joelle whilst talking
of her inspiration.
Pauline, of Sutton on the Hill, has a love of textiles which has led her to become skilled in a wide range of techniques. She creates original free-form garments, hangings and accessories as well as undertakes commissions. Her skills include spinning, pegloom weaving, freeform and bead crochet as well as locker-hooking and needle-felting all of which will be demonstrated on week days throughout the exhibition. “I love colour and texture; freeform crochet and knitting gives me the opportunity to explore this in a range of items”, states Pauline.
Joelle and Pauline share a love of crochet- but they don’t share their approaches. Joelle prefers using wire, creating eye catching and unique results whereas Pauline uses fibre, sometimes even spinning her own yarn. Both artists create unique jewellery using various techniques, which will be demonstrated during the week long exhibition.
During the weekend, Pauline and Joelle invite the public to join them to create their own piece
of jewellery. They will be sharing their specialist skills which include creating needle-felted
beads to make a handmade necklace, and the creation of seasonal brooches. The workshops will last
one hour and it is recommended to book a place in advance to avoid disappointment
